Linksys AC1200 is an extender that makes a lot of big promises. That’s really what got me interested in trying this product because I was skeptical; I wanted to prove the claims wrong.
The AC1200 claims to increase WiFi range by up to 10,000 square feet. Dual bands and wireless-AC technology allow you to stream games and movies without congestion. There are also four Gigabit Ethernet ports for wired connections. I also love that this extender has an audio jack that allows you to connect a set of speakers for wireless streaming. It’s an interesting feature that I don’t see with many other extenders.
There are a lot of things that I like about the Linksys AC1200 WiFi Range Extender, but there are some things that I feel could be better.
I’m going to share my experience with this extender in my Linksys RE6500 review.
The Linksys RE6500 isn’t as discreet as other extenders that are more like wall plug-ins. That aspect didn’t matter as much to me, but I know that some people prefer to have devices that aren’t eyesores. The RE6500 isn’t exactly an eyesore, but it looks like another router or modem.
The RE6500 is a range extender that’s pretty easy to set up.
I was surprised and pleased that installation was so easy. But if you ever change your WiFi password in the future, you may need to reconnect all of your devices again.
Because this extender has wireless-AC technology, it’s compatible with virtually any WiFi router. That made me relieved because some extenders that I’ve tested turned out not to be compatible with my current router.
It’s frustrating buying a product and finding out that it doesn’t work with your setup. It’s a waste of time and money.
Even though this isn’t my favorite WiFi extender, I do have to admit that installation was easy and the easy compatibility made the whole process a breeze.
The Linksys WiFi Range Extender says that it can increase your WiFi range by up to 10,000 square feet.
Now, I can’t confirm or deny that the RE6500 can extend this far, but it does do a decent job of expanding the signal in my house. I have a decent-sized home, but the walls and floors are pretty thick, so they present a challenge for any wireless WiFi extender.
The RE6500 did a decent job at extending my signal to the dead zone in my bedroom. I had no problems getting a signal, but I can’t say it was lightning fast. But honestly, no extender alone can boost your speeds, so keep that in mind.
I’ve read reviews on this extender, and most people claim that the range is pretty good. For most people, it should work just fine.
The reason why this model can offer such a long range is because it uses wireless-AC technology, which allows for speeds three times faster than wireless-N extenders.
The RE6500 also has two antennas that you can adjust to give you a little more control over the signal direction.
The Linksys RE6500 AC1200 dual band wireless extender operates on both 2.4Ghz and 5GHz bands. It uses something called Crossband technology, which means that it receives information on one band and transmits it on another. The extender will automatically connect to the best band available for the best performance.
Crossband technology helps prevent congestion and allows for a stronger, more consistent signal throughout the home.
This Linksys WiFi Range Extender also has four Gigabit Ethernet ports for fast wired connections. This sounds like a great feature, and it is, but in my opinion, it’s only really useful if you place this extender in your office or living room where you may actually want to use a wired connection. But if you place it anywhere else in your house, you probably won’t ever use them.
The audio jack is a cool feature of this extender, but I wouldn’t say that it’s a valuable feature. It’s one of the things that made me interested in this product only because I wanted to see how it worked. Don’t get me wrong – it’s a nice feature, but unless you have your extender in just the right spot, you’ll probably never use it.
If you plan to place your extender in the living room, kitchen or office, you may find this feature to be useful. It allows you to plug in speakers or a sound system, so that you can connect wirelessly and stream music.

The Linksys RE6500 is a nice WiFi extender. It has a long range, it offers Crossband technology, and it has wireless-AC technology. But I feel there are better options, like the Trifiboost WiFi repeater, especially considering the high price of this model. The audio jack and Gigabit Ethernet ports are nice features, but I don’t see them being all that useful for most people. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to spend extra money on features that I’ll probably never use, no matter how nice they may sound.
With that said, this extender may still be a good option for some people. The long range may make this model the only real option if you have a big home. Some of you may also enjoy and make great use of the Gigabit Ethernet ports, which allow for quick, uninterrupted streaming or online gaming.
