How to Boost Your WiFi Signal Strength Using These Simple Steps

If you’re not getting good download and upload speeds because of a weak WiFi signal, you’ll want to know how to boost your WiFi signal strength to enjoy faster speeds. Your WiFi strength will depend on several different factors, but we’re going to discuss the best way to extend your WiFi signal so that you have beautiful, strong signals all throughout your space.

How to Get Better WiFi Signal Strength and Range

Your home’s WiFi has two distinct pieces of equipment that will dictate your signal strength: modem and router. These two devices can have issues where they will degrade over time, causing you to lose your signal strength.

One of the best ways to increase your signal strength is to update both devices.

Upgrade Your Router Firmware

Your router runs on software. You may not access the software, but it is always in use and is called firmware. This firmware helps your router operate using the features and functions built into your router.

You will want to research your own router to find how you should update your firmware.

A simple way to do this is to go to Google, search for your router manufacturer and browse their site for firmware updates for your specific router. There will be instructions on how to update your firmware so that you can enjoy a stronger WiFi signal.

Change Your Router Placement

Where are you keeping your router? Every room is different, and the placement of the router can affect your overall wireless coverage. This is one of the easiest ways to improve WiFi signals.

You can boost your signal by placing your router in the center of your home.

When you place your router in the center of your home and away from any disturbances, such as cabinets or bookshelves, this will allow your signal to remain its strongest.

Every WiFi signal will have issues when the signal has to go through multiple walls.

You may also have a router that is very powerful, but the signal strength will decline after 20 or 30 feet from the router’s base. In this case you may want to try my top choice – the RangeXTD WiFi repeater – which will extend your router’s range and allow you to have a stronger signal all throughout your house.

Invest in a Wireless Extender

If you want to know how to boost WiFi signal or how to extend WiFi range and don’t mind spending some money, a wireless extender is my first recommendation. The extender will do a few things:

  • Improve signal range
  • Improve signal strength

The way that a wireless extender works is that it will take your current signal and rebroadcast it so that you have a stronger signal strength. You will need to have your extender installed in an area where your signal strength is maximized.

The extender will take the strong signal and boost it for a certain distance throughout your home or office.
When you do this, you will enjoy a stronger signal and better overall Internet speeds. It’s not uncommon to put your extender 15 feet to 20 feet from your router for best results.

Aluminum Foil Trick

A lot of individuals ask how to boost WiFi signal with aluminum foil. I wasn’t really sure that this method would work well, but there have been studies on aluminum foil and boosting your WiFi signal. There are studies on Tom’s Guide, and it is fairly easy to do. It works surprisingly well.

If you want to get started with the aluminum foil trick, you can do the following:

  • Wrap aluminum foil around the antennas on your router
  • Direct the aluminum foil toward certain areas of the home

The idea is that the foil will direct the signal to a specific area or room of the home with less signal strength loss due to signals seeping into other areas of the home.

You will find a lot of examples of this trick working using a variety of different tricks. Give them a try and judge how to improve your WiFi signal using the trick that works best for you.

Change Your Router Channel

Did you know that there are two different channels that your router will run on? The channel that you choose will have a major impact on your signal strength. Most people use the 2.4 GHz channel because it’s the standard channel that is set on most routers.

But you may find that you are better off operating on the 5 GHz channel, which will be less congested and works much better if you are in an apartment building or in an urban area.

You will be able to change this channel by going into a web browser and typing in your router’s IP address.
You will want to check your device’s manual to understand how to change the channel on your router. A quick Google search for your router and how to change the WiFi channel should be the only thing that you need to do to figure out how to get this method to work.

If you do change your channel and you find that your speed or signal is even worse than before, simply change it back, and it should work as expected.

Invest in New Equipment

If you’ve tried all the tricks that we mentioned already, you may want to invest some money in new equipment. You’ll be able to find a lot of newer routers that have multiple antennas and a better range than older routers.
Depending on your current Internet speeds, you may be able to find a router that is better capable of handling newer speeds.

Amazon and other leading retailers have routers that you can learn about. Read reviews on different routers and find one that works best for your modem and Internet connection.

Now that you know how to boost your WiFi signal strength, you’ll want to give all of these tips and tricks a try to see how strong you can get your connection. I know that I use multiple different techniques to boost my signal strength, and it works very well for me.
