How to Boost WiFi Signal With Aluminum Foil

Pretty much everyone has a WiFi router in their house nowadays and we all use it every day. But sometimes the WiFi signal is not strong enough and that can get pretty annoying, especially when you are in the middle of a YouTube video and it starts buffering.

But did you know that you can use aluminum foil to boost WiFi signal by putting it behind your WiFi antenna? That’s right, the same foil that you use to wrap your food to keep it warm can be used to boost your WiFi signal. It sounds weird, but it’s actually true.

Even though the best option by far is to get a Wifi network repeater like RangeXTD wifi booster, here is how to boost WiFi signal with aluminum foil. You will experience a significant improvement once you are done.

Aluminum Foil Boost WiFi Signal

So, how to boost WiFi signal with aluminum foil? You first need to get some things that you probably have lying around your house. You will need the following:

  • Aluminum foil
  • A box that is slightly larger than your router
  • Tape or glue
  • Scissors

Once you got all the things you need for this project, you are all set. There are only a few things that you have to do, but you may have to redo it a few times before you get the right shape and positioning.

Without any further ado, here is how to use tin foil to boost WiFi signal:

  1. You first have to stick aluminum foil inside the box. You can use your router’s box for this or make your own using cardboard. Cover all inside surfaces with aluminum foil and use tape or some sort of glue to hold it all together
  2. Cover both Antennas with the box but make sure that the open end of the box is facing the rest of your house. This works best if your router is in the corner of your house. You can cut holes in the box so that the antennas can pass through it
  3. Once you are done, experiment with the positioning to get the best signal. You can cut the sides of the box to open it up and get an even better signal

Now that you know how to increase WiFi signal with aluminum foil, it’s time to test the before and after results using a speed test app. Some people say that they get an incredible 40-50% boost in signal strength after they are done. But how to increase WiFi with aluminum foil if you don’t have any aluminum foil in the first place? Luckily, you can follow the next method.

No Aluminum Foil? Use an Empty Soda Can Instead!

So, if you do not have any aluminum foil or maybe you do not like the aluminum box esthetic, you can use soda (or beer) cans instead. Again, your router should ideally be placed in the corner of your house to get the best results. This method is easy if you have a good pair of scissors or even better a hacksaw. Here is what you have to do:

  1. Thoroughly wash the can using soap and water and then rinse it
  2. Cut off the bottom part using a knife, scissors, or a hacksaw. Be very careful because both the aluminum and the tool you are using are very sharp
  3. Cut most of the top part off but leave a small piece on so that you can open up the soda can
  4. Use the soda can hole to push the antenna through
  5. Repeat the above steps if you have multiple antennas

Just like with the cardboard box method, you will have to experiment a little bit to get the right positioning and shape. However, once you are done, you will be left with a much stronger WiFi signal. Let’s now look at two more ways on how to boost WiFi signal with aluminum foil.

What About 3D Printed Shapes?

Some research has shown that 3D printed shapes are the best way to improve your WiFi range and strength. You will have to find a reflector that can fit around your antennas and then wrap it in aluminum foil.

This method is great if you have a 3D printer or know someone who has one, but it’s not the most convenient or cheapest method. Still, it is arguably the most effective method. Let’s look at another way on how to boost WiFi signal with aluminum foil.

Use a Plastic Bottle Instead!

This is somewhat similar to the aluminum can method, but you will have to use aluminum foil with it. Here’s what you will need:

  • Soda bottle (Get a size that fits your antennas)
  • Sharpy pen
  • Exacto knife

And this is how to boost WiFi signal with aluminum foil and plastic bottle:

  1. Rinse the bottle thoroughly with water and dishwashing liquid
  2. Remove the label and use alcohol to remove any leftover residue
  3. Use a Sharpy pen to mark where to cut. You need to remove the bottom part and cut the bottle in half 3/4 through
  4. Slowly work your way around the lines using an Exacto knife
  5. Tightly wrap the bottle with aluminum foil but leave the top part exposed
  6. Put the WiFi antenna through the neck of the bottle

Again, you will have to position it properly to get the best signal. The shape is great because it will focus the signal toward your rooms and away from the wall.

We hope that you had success with any of these methods. Research has shown that these tricks really do boost your WiFi strength by a significant margin and even improve security because your signal will be blocked by the aluminum foil. These methods work best if your router is in the corner of your house.

You can even use the aluminum foil shapes to focus the signal toward a WiFi extender or repeater.

Choosing the right method is up to you. However, it’s better to invest in a professionally made WiFi booster, especially when you need it in the long run.
